Learning from our enemies: Applying Alinsky’s tactics – Guest: Author Doug Wilson | The Mark Harrington Show | 8-5-21

Doug Wilson pastors Christ Church in Moscow, ID, and is the author of over 100 books. According to Doug, Christians have much to learn from our enemies. Hence, Mark asks Doug about his book Rules for Reformers which is a reformational counter point to Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. Doug makes the distinction between reformation and revolution and explains how the principles of war can be applied to the culture war.

 

Some of the questions that will be answered are:

 

• What can Christians learn from a radical community organizer like Saul Alinsky?

• What is the difference between principles and methods, and why is the distinction important?

• Why is education important in the culture wars?

• What is “smash mouth” incrementalism?

On this episode of The Mark Harrington Show, Mark speaks with Senior Editor of The American Conservative and author of The Benedict Option and Live Not by Lies.

Here are a few questions Mark will ask:

• Is there a role for capitalism in the coming soft totalitarianism?

• What can people do to resist?

In his book, Rod speaks of the rise of soft totalitarianism brought on by identity politics which marginalizes Christians and other dissenters. Corporations now censor opinions, and technology is bringing us closer to a surveillance state. This kind of system is what every American high school student read about in Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Rod writes about “woke capitalism,” which is what you have when major corporations sign on to culturally progressive causes. In a capitalist society like ours, corporations have been much more important than the state in mainstreaming progressive values.

Live Not by Lies was released early in the COVID-19 pandemic and before the election crackdown on speech. The book predicts much of what we are seeing now.

On today’s episode, Mark will look at the political realities to assess the current state of the battle. He will analyze the three possible responses to the moral and cultural revolution and what it will take to end abortion.

 

Here are the 3 possible responses:

 

1. We can be idealistic and naïve.

2. We can be pessimistic and cynical.

3. We can take a sober assessment and plan accordingly.

 

We must be a people with a long-term vision for victory. Like the men of Issachar who “Understood the times and knew what Israel should do.”

 

Our mission cannot by dependent on the ever-changing political winds. We need to raise up the next generation of leaders to take on the culture of death and win because winning is how the killing stops.
